Wigs

Wigs are my favorite things about costumes because they are the last step in dressing a look and tie the garment to the actor, completing the illusion.

The black and white wig is for the character Kōtarō Bokuto from the anime Haikyuu!! The wig is a lace front from Arda Wigs that I ventilated the hairline on with black wefts and hand sewed about 12 other smaller wefts into the body of the wig. I didn't want to dye the wig or paint it in worry that the streaks would become too heavy handed and muddy. Ventilating and wefting gave me the chance to place every section exactly as I wanted. The widows peak was lightly spirit gummed and only a few bobby pins were needed to keep the wig in place, allowing me to run, jump, and dramatically pose without worry.

The ombre undercut was my own design for Lup Taaco from The Adventure Zone by Griffin McElroy. It's a fantasy Dungeons & Dragons podcast so designs are up for interpretation. Her character is edgy and embodies fire so I wanted the wig to mimic flames. I had the short white and long curly blonde wig from Arda Wigs. I cut the skin top away from the curly wig and hand sewed it to the top of the short one. I harvested wefts from the rest of the wig to fill in gaps and add the parts around the ear tabs, as well as for dye tests. I choose to sew my wigs instead of gluing to maintain the right stretch, so I can take them apart in case of error, or the chance of glue loosing its integrity over time or in the dye bath. Using Rit DyeMore in yellow, orange, red, and purple, I made a dye bath that I gradually darkened, incrementally dipping my wig into to achieve the color gradient I wanted. After washing it and combing it out, I added braids for style and to cover the seams and then finger curled the wig with a flat iron and my hands.

The brown wig was cut and styled from a shoulder length bob to an older, masculine look for John Hunger from The Adventure Zone. The grey, black, and white wig was originally a grey wig I half dyed and then added white wefts to the front for Shiro from Voltron: Legendary Defender. The long black wig was dyed a navy black, curled, and braided and then decorated with cherry blossoms for Sloane from The Adventure Zone.
